It is my pleasure to welcome you to The American College of the Mediterranean (ACM). With our main campus in Aix-en-Provence, France, and satellite campuses in Spain and Morocco, ACM is the ideal setting for students interested in pursuing their education at an American institution that is dedicated to exploring the important relationship between Western Europe and North Africa.
Thanks to our study abroad institute, the Institute for American Universities (IAU), ACM has a rich, long history in Southern France that dates back to 1957. It was at this time that U.S. diplomats felt the pressing need to establish an American institution to encourage U.S. students to study politics and the language of diplomacy in Aix-en-Provence, France. Sixty years later we find ourselves renewing our dedication to international education with the introduction of several bachelor’s and master’s programs in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Business.
The synthesis of academic and experiential learning informs the pedagogical spirit of ACM. Our goal is to educate students in the American tradition of liberal arts while leveraging the site-specificity of the Mediterranean. ACM’s team of talented full-time, tenured, and tenure-track faculty are dedicated to social issues across the curriculum. Many of our faculty are former diplomats, artists, journalists, practitioners of conflict resolution, and business men and women who have dedicated their lives to educating the future leaders of our world. Students at ACM are thus challenged to disentangle the complexities of racial identity, class struggle, and gender segregation in Europe and North Africa.
When you choose to participate in one of our many undergraduate or graduate degree programs, you are choosing to become part of a unique group of young scholars who challenge the dominant discourses that plague our world today. ACM welcomes students from all backgrounds and identities and encourages them to fully engage in the rich and complicated history of the Mediterranean.
On behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration, I look forward to personally welcoming each of you to ACM and our community of globally-minded students and scholars.
